Dogs

New microchipping Law: From April 2016 it became compulsory for owners to ensure their dog is Microchipped

Dog Tags: Your dog must wear a collar & tag with your name & address when in a public place. Again you could be fined or charged if your dog gets lost

Buying a Puppy:  All breeders now have to Microchip their Puppies before the age of 8 weeks. So if you are buying a puppy ask for proof the puppy has been Microchipped. If not then ask to see the Veterinarian report as to why they have not been able to be microchipped

Is your Dog Microchipped? You can get your Dog scanned for a Microchip at the Vets, dog warden, dog homes or a trained implanter. There may be a charge for this service

Registration: Your dog must be registered on one of the government approved databases which includes MyPet, Petlog, Animal tracker, PETrac & more.

Updating Details: Its just as important when you move house or location or pass on the dog the details must be update. There may be a fee for this

Reporting Microchip Failures: Microchips are reliable and safe, but they do occasionally fail to work. From 24 February 2015 anyone who finds that an implanted microchip has failed or has moved from where it was implanted, or where a microchip has caused any abnormal reaction in the animal, must report it to the microchip adverse event reporting scheme run by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate. Pet owners or keepers can seek advice from their vets

Cats

Cat Microchipping to be made mandatory: The Government is to introduce compulsory cat microchipping to help reunite lost & stray pets. Owners will be required to microchip their cats by the time they reach 20 weeks of age.

Under the new plans, all keepers must ensure their pet is microchipped before they reach the age of 20 weeks and their contact details stored and kept up to date in a pet microchipping database. Owners found not to have microchipped their cat will have 21 days to have one implanted, or may face a fine of up to £500.
